As it turns out, Art the Clown has more clout at the box office than the Clown Prince of Crime. The man who portrays Art in the acclaimed holiday horror film, Terrifier 3, reveals his shock that the threequel outperformed Joker: Folie à Deux during its opening weekend.
Speaking with TMZ, Terrifier 3 star David Howard Thornton claimed he’s “stunned” the movie outperformed the Joker sequel given the hype surrounding Folie à Deux. Thornton equated the box-office upset to a David vs. Goliath story, considering Terrifier 3‘s independent status against Warner Bros.’ latest major title. “I’m stunned. This is not something you hear about every single day,” he said. “This is a David vs. Goliath type of story because Terrifier 3 was a low-budget independent film, and we were going up against a 200-something million dollar comic book juggernaut. That’s a feat I never expected to see in my life. I’m just floored by it all.”

“We’re Certainly Exploiting Violence. That’s Why We’re Here!” – Damien Leone on Terrifier 3
Director Damien Leone shares the notorieity of the Terrifier franchise, Christmas tropes, Art the Clown and outdoing the last film’s grossest kills.
Terrifier 3 won the box-office battle against Folie à Deux, making $18.25 million in its first weekend compared to the Joker follow-up, which made just $7 million during its second weekend and suffered the biggest dropoff of any comic book movie in its first two weeks. Thornton hailed fans of the Terrifier franchise and believes that staying true to the film series’ essence is the biggest driver for the movie’s early success.
“It’s the fans that made this happen, so we’re very, very grateful to the fans for supporting us…we have a very dedicated fanbase” he said. “We weren’t beholden to the studio system. We were approached by studios to do Terrifier 3. And, they threw money at us. And, we turned them down because they wanted to, basically, compromise the integrity of the film and what fans have come to expect from our brand….we wanted to stick to what the fans wanted and what we wanted to do.”

‘My Favorite Villain of All Time’: Terrifier’s Art the Clown Actor Reveals Dream DCU Role
Terrifier 3 star David Howard Thornton reveals the DC Comics villain he’d love to play in James Gunn’s DC Universe after he’s done with Art the Clown.
Thornton has portrayed Art the Clown throughout the Terrifier trilogy. In Terrifier 3, Thornton’s character obsessively pursues Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) as Sienna looks to rebuild her life during the holiday season. Distributed by CineVerse and directed by franchise helmer Damien Leone, Terrifier 3 is on its way to becoming a cult film like the previous two entries, becoming the movie series’ highest-grossing entry ($26.2 million worldwide) in less than a week and holding a 74% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Joker Sequel Fell Far Short of Expectations
The backlash surrounding Folie à Deux since its Oct. 4 premiere is well documented, with the movie projected to barely make back its $200 million budget (not including marketing/distribution costs) at the box office and already on its way to digital. Following up Joker, the second-highest-grossing R-rated film ever and an Oscar-winning effort, Folie à Deux is set to lose Warner Bros. between $150 million and $200 million. The musical psychological thriller, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Stefani “Lady Gaga” Germanotta, has a 33% critical rating and 31% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Amid Terrifier 3‘s success, Leone has already hinted at developing more sequels, confirming in September that the fourth installment is in the works. The latest Terrifier flick also features Margaret Anne Florence, Bryce Johnson and All Elite Wrestling star Chris Jericho.
Terrifier 3 is now showing in theaters across North America.
