New concept artwork has been revealed for Deadpool & Wolverine, highlighting another cameo idea that didn’t make the cut. This one would have seen variants of The Avengers characters in the MCU, but wearing outfits honoring various comic book legends.
On Instagram, artist Andy Park shared a look at his concept artwork for the cameo ahead of its publishing in the upcoming book The Art of Deadpool & Wolverine. The art reveals Deadpool joining the characters of The Avengers as seen in the 2012 film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but their outfits have been replaced, making them look more like the classic versions of the superheroes as seen in comic book stories from years past. They include retro versions of Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Iron Man.

The caption of the Instagram post shared by Park reads in part, “This post I show you how I honored MANY comic book legends during preproduction on working on the DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE film before there was even a script. I pitched a fun idea where Deadpool would jump through multiverses and arrive at the MCU, Marvel COMICS Universe! And each character would exist in the art style of a legendary comic book artist. Each who have inspired me greatly!”
Not Every Idea Could Make the Final Cut of Deadpool & Wolverine
The characters of the Marvel Comics Universe did not end up appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, in part because there was only room to fit in so many cameos. Other variants that went unused have been revealed in concept art as well, including another that honors Deadpool’s creator, Rob Liefeld, with an outfit that he would appreciate. Ajnother idea would have seen a variant of both Deadpool and Wolverine that mashes the two characters together, combining traits from each.

Movie characters from Marvel-inspired films were also in consideration. Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there had been tentative plans to include an appearance from Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider, though it remains unclear if the actor turned down the offer, or if it was written off before getting to that point. There were also ideas about possibly bringing in Ben Affleck to play his version of Daredevil, but that concept didn’t make it far enough along for the Justice League star to be approached.
As far as who does appear in the film, Hugh Jackman notably joins Reynolds as one of the two lead stars. Those making special appearances include Channing Tatum as Gambit, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Chris Evans as Human Torch.
Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in movie theaters.
