Phir Milenge, released in 2004 stars Shilpa Shetty, Salman Khan and Abhishek Bachchan. The film was directed by Revathi, and was inspired by the Hollywood film Philadelphia (1993). The movie dealt with the subject of AIDS and was critically acclaimed upon release but proved to be unsuccessful at the box office.
Phir Milenge is noted as Shetty’s career-best performance which earned her widespread critical acclaim and nominations for Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Screen Awards, and Zee Cine Awards.
Shilpa Shetty’s take on commercial and art film
In an unfiltered conversation with Zoom, Shilpa Shetty talked about the impact this film had made on her life, she even explained the difference between a commercial film and an art film.
Talking about getting the role, Shilpa said, “I was very happy when I was approached for the film as it was the first time I was asked to do such a role, prior to this I was only taken as an entertaining actress but with this film, not just my acting abilities were highlighted but also I grew as a human being. It was the first time I was part of a socially relevant film.”
Further, she added, “If you ask people if they wanna watch a socially relevant film or a masala entertainer, they will choose entertainment.”
Talking about people tagging it as her ‘career-best performance’ Shilpa said, “It’s not easy for an actor to justify themselves in a commercial film as it is larger than life. I just wish Phir Milenge had a bigger impact because such films are risky, people don’t want to put their money in such films which are not very entertaining.”
“I don’t believe in the differentiation between art cinema and commercial cinema. I believe the films that work are called commercial, the ones that don’t are art films, that is all the difference there is.”

Despite being a minor commercial success, the performances of the film were applauded. Shilpa Shetty in particular was highly applauded for her portrayal of an HIV+ patient. Her performance earned her Best Actress nominations at the Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Screen Awards and Zee Cine Awards.
