Steam Incorporated’s much-loved heritage trains will
once again roll into the Hawkes Bay this summer, bringing a
range of unique rail journeys to the Art Deco Festival
between February 19th and the 23rd. Across five
action-packed days, steam and diesel-hauled journeys will
operate throughout the region, down all the way to
Woodville, with a mix of classic favourites and three
brand-new experiences.
Steam Incorporated’s
1915-built steam locomotive Ab 608 “Passchendaele” will
be making its Art Deco debut this year. Named in memory of
New Zealand’s railwaymen who fell at the Battle of
Passchendaele, the locomotive will haul selected services
alongside the society’s pair of heritage diesel-electrics
throughout the weekend.
Steam Incorporated is again
teaming up with the Cancer Society Hawke’s Bay for a
fundraising day of rail adventures. Following the success of
2025’s partnership, the 2026 programme expands to include
the ever-popular Hawke’s Bay Flyer Day trip to Woodville,
plus a brand-new event, Murder Aboard the Waipuk’ Express.
This is an immersive live theatre experience delivered in
partnership with Flaming Mojo, featuring a murder-mystery
performance, a heritage train journey to Waipukurau, and
light evening refreshments.
“We’re proud to be
part of these special heritage journeys through Hawke’s
Bay, helping raise vital funds for local cancer support
services,” says Jaki Supra, Events Coordinator for the
Cancer Society Hawke’s Bay. “Every ticket purchased for
Saturday contributes directly to assisting individuals and
families affected by cancer in our region.”

“The
Art Deco Festival is unlike any other event in New Zealand.
It takes place in the heart of Napier’s beautiful Art Deco
city, where 1930s architecture provides a stunning backdrop
for a festival of celebration and community spirit,” says
Jonathan Smith, Event Manager for the Art Deco
Trust.
“The return of the steam train is always a
festival highlight. Seeing it roll into Napier, billowing
steam and filled with passengers dressed in vintage fashion,
sets the scene perfectly for the weekend that
follows.”
“It’s a true celebration of planes,
trains and automobiles in 2026. From the steam train’s
arrival to vintage aircraft overhead and classic cars lining
the streets, the golden age of travel will be brought
vividly to life right here in Napier,” says Jonathan
Smith.
Steam Incorporated’s Tommy Secker says the
Kāpiti-based organisation is thrilled to
return.
“Our team loved bringing steam back to the
Bay earlier this year,” he says. “We’re excited to
build on that momentum with new experiences that will create
lifelong memories and showcase New Zealand’s rail heritage
to a new generation.”
