The Modern House
Constructed in 1934, this modernist gem in Buckinghamshire, England, is the epitome of the modern interpretation of a country house. Shrubs Wood, as the property is known, was designed by architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, and has been awarded a Grade II listing.
The home boasts an impressive pedigree of ownership, including Bridget D’Oyley Carte, owner of the D’Oyley Carte Opera Company and the Savoy Hotel, whose designs for the surrounding garden remain intact today.

Inside, the home is bursting with original details, including joinery, metal window frames and rich zebra-striped sycamore wood.
Other architectural statements distinctive of the Art Deco age include a sweeping curved staircase with concrete steps encased in glass. There is also a flat rooftop, among others which embody many of the five principles of architecture laid out by Le Corbusier – widely considered to be the disciple of Deco.

The home is entered by means of a spacious hallway, at the end of which lies what was once the ballroom, now repurposed as an amply proportioned living room complete with a green marble fireplace and large windows overlooking the terrace.
Elsewhere on the main storey can be found a study, boot room, formal dining room and recently renovated kitchen. Upstairs, you’ll find six stately bedrooms, as well as another sitting room with views out over the 10.5-acre (4.2ha) grounds.
The home was for sale via The Modern House in June 2025 for £4.4 million ($6m).

This stately abode in Queensland, Australia has been voted one of the top five beach houses in the world. Hidden within 14 acres (5.7ha) of native bushland, the home provides the ultimate privacy and tranquillity, with views out over the breathtaking Honeymoon Bay.
The home, which is known as ‘alinghi’, was designed by architect James Grose, who endeavoured to create the sensation of gliding above the Pacific Ocean.
