Ethereal Forms, contrasts of colour, textures, personal expressions and styles through abstract art, is what this upcoming art exhibition at Creative Expressions Art Gallery in Żejtun will be offering its viewers and lovers of original art.
The exhibition is curated by Kris Debono and will be bringing together contemporary artistic talent from four Maltese artists – Damian Ebejer, Noel Attard, Patrizia Val Madiona and Clint Xuereb.
Damian Ebejer: A renowned name in the Maltese artistic scene, with an artistic repertoire that includes mural painting, sculpture and poetry. Ebejer escapes from adhering to any style and approach and is often prompted to explore different methods and ideas. He has been commissioned to design and paint murals and ceilings in the Italian neo-Classical, naive Sicilian Gothic, Rococo, early Baroque and Byzantine styles. These can be found in palaces, private residences and museums in Italy, Greece, England, Malta and Gozo. “My personal work is normally about finding the abstract in life, both the physical and the spiritual. Usually my art is about myself, where I am sometimes hidden and other times blatantly visible. I am what I create. I persist in a constant discovery of myself. I am not terribly interested in portraying the reality I see outside of myself; I search for a collective beauty, entangled with the ugly and chaotic, in order to compose a subconscious recognition of beauty and fascinating order. Most of my works have derived from ideas which I have carried with me for many years and finally put brush to canvas to realize them… now they are free,” Ebejer explains.
Noel Attard delves into the concept of the ethereal through the artworks featured in this collective exhibition. In this body of work, Attard explores themes associated with lightness, delicacy, spirituality, the intangible and beauty – creating an immersive experience that transcends the physical world. This collection of works marks a significant development from Attard’s previous artistic phase, which focused primarily on landscape painting. While his landscapes often conveyed a subtle sense of the otherworldly, these new works move decisively toward abstraction. Unlike his earlier abstract pieces, which explored themes from psychology, philosophy, or theology, his present works aim to evoke atmospheric states and metaphysical reflections. Attard presents these works not as definitive statements, but as open-ended invitations. Each viewer brings their own intellectual and emotional background to the encounter, shaping their journey through the ethereal.
Patrizia Val Madiona is another local artist who meticulously creates unique, abstract artworks by blending layers of plaster, acrylic, and mixed media to create elegant textures and a sense of movement. Each piece is a conversation between control and surrender, allowing the materials to guide her while taking shape. She is inspired by anime, movies and the concept of auras. Her pieces invite viewers into unseen dimensions where energy, perception, and reality intertwine. Patrizia’s work is an invitation to look beyond the surface, to question perception, and to embrace the beauty of imperfection. Through her art; she aims to evoke curiosity, emotion, and reflection. Each artwork is more than just texture and colour – it holds energy, emotion, and a story waiting to connect with the viewer, to spark inspiration, evoke curiosity, and bring a sense of wonder every time.
Clint Xuereb: His artistic journey is a continuous exploration of discovering concepts, textures, and the emotional depth within abstract forms. Guided by a fascination with the interplay of light and shades, he gives us a kind of work which seeks to evoke a sense of movement, atmosphere, and internal reflection. He is drawn to the transformative power of different forms of media, ranging from traditional materials to experimental techniques, which allow him to shift perspectives and reinterpret familiar themes. Each piece becomes a study in contrast and cohesion, as he experiments with layered surfaces, nuanced colour palettes, and unconventional structures. At the core of his practice is an intuitive process: a dialogue between spontaneity and control, where ideas emerge through material interactions. Through abstraction, Xuereb aims to invite viewers into a shared space of contemplation, where textures speak as loudly as form, and light becomes a narrative element in itself.
