The newly released …And Justice For Art: Stories About Heavy Metal Album Covers – Ultimate Edition is now available, offering metal fans an expansive deep dive into the visual history of heavy music. Packed with 372 glossy colour pages, more than 700 graphics, and over 120 exclusive interviews, the limited-run hardcover book celebrates the artwork behind some of metal’s most legendary albums.
Originally published in 2015 and long out of print, the updated edition has been completely rewritten, redesigned, and expanded by author Ramon Oscuro. Rather than simply reissuing the original volume, Oscuro rebuilt the project from the ground up, adding 108 new pages featuring fresh interviews, new chapters, and hundreds of additional images covering heavy music imagery from 1970 through 2025.
The book explores the stories behind iconic covers from bands including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Neurosis, Cynic, At The Gates, Opeth, Darkthrone, Suffocation, and Tiamat. Featured albums include Black Sabbath, Killers, …And Justice For All, Reign In Blood, Focus, Slaughter Of The Soul, Heritage, A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Effigy Of The Forgotten, Wildhoney, and Times Of Grace.
In addition to album artwork analysis, the book includes commentary and interviews with artists and musicians from across the metal spectrum. Contributors include Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Nailbomb, ex-Sepultura), Jeff Walker (Carcass), David Vincent (Vltimas, ex-Morbid Angel), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Esa Holopainen (Amorphis), Fenriz (Darkthrone), and Tom Angelripper (Sodom).
Legendary visual artists also contribute throughout the book, including Eliran Kantor, Dan Seagrave, Travis Smith, Valnoir, and Costin Chioreanu, who designed the book’s cover artwork.
Ramon Oscuro comments:
“This hardcover book features 372 glossy color pages, more than 700 images and firsthand information about hundreds of graphics, which are presented in extremely high quality. This is a complete reinvention of the original …And Justice For Art book published in 2015, which has been out-of-print for almost a decade.”
According to David Vincent, who wrote the foreword, the book serves as “a historical document about the importance of Metal album covers.” Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera praised the project “for helping to keep alive the ritual of the album cover,” while Cattle Decapitation vocalist Travis Ryan described the release as “exactly what the music world needs to remind us how important album covers have been to all of us that grew up surrounding ourselves with physical media.”
The Ultimate Edition is limited to just 500 copies worldwide.
