Shades of the past: Yenke Peddler antiques

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Ohio National Doll Show, sponsored by UFDC, is set for this weekend, Oct. 5 and 6, at the Cherry Valley Hotel & Expo Center in Newark, Ohio.

Saturday’s lectures and meals are sold out, but you can visit the sale showroom and shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10.

Vendors will be offering dolls, toys and bears, from yesteryear to modern. Some are artist-inspired creations.

Also this weekend is Oglebayfest, held at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, W.Va.

The fun runs from noon to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is free.

There will be a juried art show sponsored by Phil Maxwell’s Artists and Gourmet Market.

Speaking of artists, one of the famous doll creators from the 1920s was Joseph Kallus of Brooklyn, N.Y. He made the quintessential Kewpies, Margie, Pinkie and Joy and the famous composition Bye-lo Babies of Grace Story Putman (Cameo Doll Co.).

Another American doll is the Rag Doll, made for the J.B. Sheppard Co. of Philadelphia in 1900. It had a boy’s appearance and was rugged, with prominent cheeks and very slightly rolled ears. These cloth dolls carried a Baby Stuart marking on the body.

Your lovely collector’s bottle and decorative lid appear to be from the 1920s. It’s a great keepsake for smalls, or just as a symbol of the past. Value is $20.
