Move over, gallery walls: 2026 is all about wall tapestries. For years—centuries, even—these time-honored textiles have been displayed in museums all around the world. But now, we’re starting to see them everywhere from social media posts, to interior design projects, to who knows? Maybe even your own home.
For designer Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox, the uptick of tapestries is the result of a long-standing love for vintage decor. “We’re always looking for interesting ways to fill our walls, and tapestries check all the boxes,” he shares.
But if you ask Marie Flanigan, it signals a shift towards the old school. “Tapestries bring in texture, history, and a sense of craftsmanship that balances the clean lines and restraint we see in so many interiors today,” the Houston, Texas, designer explains. “They also soften a space in a way that feels collected rather than decorative, which resonates with how people want their homes to feel right now—layered, personal, and lived-in.”
How to Find the Perfect Tapestry
Since tapestries are inherently aged, designers agree that they’re best sourced at a vintage store. Flanigan says e-tailers like 1st Dibs and Chairish are packed with gorgeous pieces from reliable vendors. “The key is to shop slowly and thoughtfully,” she recommends. “Tapestries are the kind of investment pieces that are worth waiting for.”
Not one to sift through antiquities? You could also shop Lone Fox’s collaboration with Joon Loi, which scanned and reproduced Scott’s personal tapestry at a lower price point. “A true antique tapestry is not accessible to most people, so we wanted to offer the look for less,” Scott explains. “It is also less precious.”
The key difference between expensive and economical choices, Scott says, lies in both weaving techniques and materials. “Learn how to tell the difference between a hand-knotted tapestry, a machine-woven one, and a printed version,” he says. “They all have their place, but you would not want to pay the price of a hand-tied tapestry when you are really getting what is essentially a woven throw blanket.” While printed tapestries might be easier to spot, hand-knotted and woven might be more difficult to tell apart. Generally, hand-knotted textiles have small, irregular knots in the back.
As for materials? “Natural fibers, like wool or linen, have a richness, weight, and color variation that signal true craftsmanship and allow the piece to age beautifully,” Flanigan adds. If you are going to splurge on a hand-knotted tapestry, proper maintenance is key. “Keep tapestries out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and vacuum lightly with a low-suction attachment to remove dust,” she says. “Also avoid harsh cleaning methods.” If you’re ever confused, consult a professional like a textile conservator.
How to Style a Tapestry
Whether you buy the real deal or a budget-friendly alternative, it’s important to give your tapestry the stylish spotlight it deserves. “They work beautifully when paired with a restrained palette and thoughtful contrast, so their craftsmanship and character remain the focus,” she adds. “Let them be the quiet statement rather than competing with bold art or heavy pattern nearby.”
She also says tapestries should be treated more like an architectural element than an accessory. “A tapestry should feel considered and architectural, not like an accessory,” Flanigan says. “It needs to be proportioned thoughtfully to the wall and surrounding furnishings.”
Half the battle is finding the proper proportion—and the other half? Hanging up the tapestry so it looks meticulous, not messy. While Scott has used nails and pocket rods, his favorite method is currently tapestry clips, which are a quick web search away. “They typically sandwich the tapestry in a clip that should not damage it,” he says. Meanwhile, Flanigan likes to opt for a modern touch by mounting a tapestry on linen and framing it in a clear acrylic shadow box.
But while the tapestry motif is the perfect match for your walls, Flanigan argues it can exist elsewhere. “Don’t be afraid to think creatively about how a textile can bring warmth and character into your home,” she says. “They can be used as headboards, footboard, side rails, room dividers, or pillow textiles.” First stop: Your gallery walls.
